I went home for Christmas, and of course enjoyed the many good family times, and joyous occasion of Christmas.   But I was very conscious of our 'Lucky Country', and the comfort and ease of our lifestyle compared to many in Vietnam who 'do it hard'.     We do of course have poor people in Australia, however, all are equal in that we have access to medical services when we need it.

Whilst yes, Vietnam is enjoying a good economic growth with even better times predicted, this doesn't mean that the increasing wealth flows on down to the poor and struggling in this society, especially those in the outlying areas.   Many of the small farming villages live a subsistence life, and families struggle to pay for things such as education for their children, and medicines and medical services.  Many live with debilitating diseases and life threatening illnesses because they cannot afford the cost of medical help.
Today I just received a call from our blind masseuse.  His wife is very sick with a swollen liver, the doctor recommends hospitalisation, however they do not have the money to afford this.  His call for help comes at a time when we have so little funds as yet.
